Debunking Monckton

Peter Sinclair’s “Climate Crock of the Week” videos are always a must-watch and he has now turned his attention to everyone’s favourite potty peer Christopher Monckton, 3rd Viscount Monckton of Brenchley. In fact he had so much material to work with he has spread it over two videos. There is of course an element of fish-in-a-barrel about this, but given the fact that Monckton’s absurd self aggrandisement and his ability to mask the dishonesty of his arguments in obscure pseudo-scientific jargon are no hindrance to his being taken unfathomably seriously by the “sceptic” community it is still a worthwhile, and extremely entertaining excercise. So here they are – enjoy!

Another vindication for CRU

Well it’s been a quiet couple of weeks here, due to my having to balance a combination of work pressures, illness, family commitments and training for the London Marathon, but good news is always worth reporting.
Following the recent exoneration of Professor Phil Jones by the parliamentary Science and Technology Committee, the panel led by Lord Oxburgh charged with investigating the research carried out by CRU has released its findings, and concluded that

We saw no evidence of any deliberate scientific malpractice in any of the work of the Climatic Research Unit and had it been there we believe that it is likely that we would have detected it. Rather we found a small group of dedicated if slightly disorganised researchers who were ill-prepared for being the focus of public attention.

There were, not surprisingly, some areas where they found room for improvement such as closer collaboration with professional statisticians, but overall the report is a vindication for CRU and a blow for those who have been making accusations of malpractice, although they will no doubt call it a whitewash as they did with the parliamentary enquiry. They now have to pin their hopes on the third enquiry headed by Sir Muir Russell, which is due to report soon.

Update: Eli has a good summary of the panel’s key findings here. And the accusations of a whitewash have begun.
